Scholarships and Bursaries for New Students

Application process

Applicants for all scholarships are required to outline in 500 words or less why they qualify to receive a particular scholarship.

Please submit all applications via the online form.

You can apply for multiple scholarships or bursaries in one application, but please ensure you address all the relevant criteria for each scholarship or bursary selected.

Applications for 2024 scholarships have closed.

Members of the Platinum Club (reserved for Old Collegians and friends of the IJʿ) have been given the unique opportunity to launch a process of giving to an endowment fund to secure the future of young women and men studying at universities other than UQ and who are in financial need.

Each scholarship will have a maximum value of $2000. This scholarship is paid in the first semester to reduce the fees payable

This scholarship is awarded to new residents of King’s Collegeundertaking undergraduate study and is based on financial need.

This scholarship is awarded to new residents of King’s Collegewho are studying at the University of Queensland, undertaking undergraduate study and is based on financial need.

$4000 towards King’s fees for the NEW student with the best ATAR.

This Scholarship is awarded to a NEW resident of King’s College(any year of study) based onacademic performance, potential contribution to the Collegeand financial need.

Over a 12 month period, this scholarship is paid in equal parts in first and second semesters to reduce the fees payable.

This Scholarship is awarded to a student with anexceptionally high standard of performance in their chosen sport (Inter-CollegeCompetition (ICC) compatible).

In order to receive this scholarship the student must agree to play their sport for King’s Collegein the ICC competition while also playing for the compatible UQ Club.

The recipient of this Scholarship will be at an泦پDzԲhigh standard in their chosen pursuit (ICC compatible).

In order to receive this scholarship the student must agreeto participate in the relevant art-form in the ICC CulturalCompetition (e.g. choir, instrumental, debating, drama etc).

This scholarship is awarded to new residents of King’s Collegeundertaking undergraduate study and is based on financial need.

The Dr Mary Mahoney AO Scholarship is for a female student attending King’s Collegeand is awarded on the basis of leadership and community involvement.

This Scholarship is named after the late Dr Mary Mahoney AO (a great believer in “Girls Can Do Anything”) to recognise Kingswomen who have significantly contributed to their community.

This Scholarship was made possible through a generous gift to the CollegeFoundation in 2022 from Dr Patrick Mahoney in memory of his dearly loved wife Mary. Both Patrick and Mary have always been great supporters of King’s Collegeover the years.

To begin in 2023, there will be an annual $5,000 Scholarship awarded.

Criteria:

    1. For a female King’s Collegestudent to assist with Collegeresidential fees while studying at University.
    2. Scholarships are awarded to a full-time university female student who can demonstrate their –
      • Leadership and contribution to their community (school, sporting club or similar, orchestra, environmental group etc.); and
      • how they will contribute to the community of King’s IJʿ.
    1. Funds will be credited in two instalments to cover Collegeresidential fees at the beginning of each semester.
    2. It is expected the Dr Mary Mahoney AO Scholarship recipients will continue to give back to their community and at Collegeevents – and to inspire their peers to do so.
    3. An application for an award of this Scholarship shall be lodged with the Master on or before 22 September in the year of application. The application MUST include the candidate’s name, address, academic record, proposed programme, written application outlining their community contributions and the names of at least two referees.

This Scholarship is to be awarded to a new full-time resident of King’s Collegeundertaking undergraduate Science studies at The University of Queensland (UQ) and is based on financial need.

Established in 2021 by King’s Collegeunder the Create Change Scholarship Match Initiative and maintained by income generated from the endowment fund.

  • Number awarded:up to 5 Scholarships may be awarded each year.
  • Eligibility, selection criteria:In accordance with Addendum 1 of the UQ Residential Scholarship rules.
  • Value:$4,500 minimum for 1 year.

The purpose of these scholarships is to assist students who have demonstrated that they arecapable of playing Rugby Union at a high standard who have applied to live at King’s and who are also members ofthe UQ Rugby Academy.

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students who have demonstrated that they arecapable of playing Rugby Union at a high standard and who have applied to live at King’s.

The Scholarship is made possible through a generous gift to the CollegeFoundation in 2017 from Dr Daryl (King’s 1982 – 1983) and Mrs Lisa Holmes.

Scholarships are awarded to a full time university student who can demonstrate their –

  • academic potential;
  • future contributions to the Collegeand the community; and
  • significant achievements to date.

It is expected the Holmes Scholarship recipients will continue to give back to their community and at Collegeevents – and to inspire their peers to do so.

Holmes Scholars MUST maintain some part-time work during their year as a Scholar.

To be awarded to a student who is a legatee. Proudly sponsored by the King’s Old Collegians Association.

This scholarship will be offered for the first time in 2022 to a new student entering King’s IJʿ. It will be awarded to a student who must demonstrate that they are in financial need. Additionally, the student will have completed their secondary education at an Education Queensland school and will be resident in a rural or remote location in Queensland. Value to be determined.

Selection Criteria

Where applicable, your application will be assessed using the following information.

a) Accepted to King’s Collegeas a new resident (must apply via www.kings.uq.edu.au), as per the IJʿ’s normal application process
b) Demonstrated willingness to be involved in The Inter-CollegeCompetition (ICC)
c) Evidence of having competed at a representative level
d) Proven leadership skills
e) To be able to, under normal circumstances, compete for King’s Collegein ICC competitions and represent the University at Club and University Games level
f) To maintain a GPA of 4 or above while studying at a Brisbane based university.

These scholarships are offered only at the discretion of the King’s CollegeMaster, whose decision is final. All scholarships are offered as discounts off normal accommodation fees.
In order to receive any of these scholarships the student must be accepted as a member of King’s Collegeand as such must successfully complete the application process.

Scholarships and Bursaries for Current Students

Eligibility

This scholarship is awarded to continuing residents of King’s Collegeentering their 2nd or later year of undergraduate study and is based on financial need.

Application Process

All current students will be emailed in Semester Two inviting them to submit applications for these scholarships and bursaries. Submissions will be made to the Director of Academic and Career Services.

This scholarship is awarded to returning residents of King’s Collegewho are studying at the University of Queensland, undertaking undergraduate study and is based on financial need.

In memory of Robert Wensley’s outstanding service to King’s IJʿ, Robert’s family and the Collegehave agreed to establish a scholarship to be known as The Wensley Schoolarship.

The scholarship will be awarded to a continuing student wishing to remain at the Collegefor a second or later year and whose financial situation precludes this.

The Mary Mahoney AO Scholarship will be offered for the first time in 2023. New and returning students to King’s are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Commemorating David Williams, Morag Johnston, and Charles and Joy Jones, this scholarship is awarded to a student wishing to remain at the Collegefor a second or later year, and has outstanding demonstration of King’s Collegecore values.

The Henry Jennings Scholarship is made possible through the donations and support of Henry Jennings’ parents and Henry’s many friends.

Henry was a 3rd year student studying business at The University of Queensland while residing at King’s Collegefrom 2018 to 2020. Henry was tragically killed in January 2021 and Alison and Peter Jennings, along with Henry’s cohort, have put this scholarship in place to honour Henry.

Henry was everyone’s friend and a friend to everyone. He had a flair for making people happy, his smile was contagious. He was an easy natural leader with the uncanny ability of balancing social activities and his studies appearing to be taking life easy while at the same time passing exams, meeting deadlines while still making it all look easy. He was a mate, a confidante, a loyal friend and loved all sports.

This scholarship is to be awarded to a student who shows these amazing qualities.

Scholarship Criteria:

  1. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a full-time 3rd year resident student at King’s Collegeduring their 3rdyear
  2. The value of the scholarship is to be $5,000.
  3. The Scholarship shall be offered annually by King’s IJʿ.
  4. A candidate for the Scholarship must be a resident of the Collegeand be a 3rd Year full-time student.
  5. The Scholarship is to be awarded to the student who portrays the qualities Henry held dear:
    • Loyalty
    • Mateship
    • Party Spirit – capacity to bring people together
    • Natural unassuming style of leadership
    • Compassion
    • Sportsmanship and fair play
  6. All applications for the Scholarship must be submitted to the Master on or before 22 September, either by the individual (with 2 referees) or by the peers of a proposed applicant.
  7. Short listed candidates will be required at interview with the cohort of peers and Henry’s parents.

A bursary funded by Mr Christopher Ho in honour of his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ho are good role models to family, friends and the wider community. Mr. Ho is the first among five siblings to receive a state sponsored scholarship to pursue a diploma in mechanical engineering in 1971. He has since built a successful career spanning Malaysia and Indonesia. Mrs. Ho is the eldest of seven siblings. She grew the family business, helping put her siblings through school. Together, Mr. And Mrs. Ho have been loving, dedicated and faithful to their children. All three children have managed to complete university studies and are contributing members of society.

The Bursary will be awarded to a student commencing their second or later year of study and the student must have a GPA of at least 5.5. It is also expected that the recipient will clearly be a good role model and will have already contributed to the IJʿ’s sporting and community life. They should be a positive example to their peers. The student must return to Collegein the year of the award being given.

This scholarship is awarded to returning residents of King’s Collegeand is based on financial need.

Commemorating Messrs. Gibson, Stewart and Lucas, this scholarship is awarded to a student with the best overall performance intending to continue in Collegefor the ensuing year.

Selection Criteria

Your application will be assessed by the following information. Please ensure that it is accurate.

a) Entering the 2nd year or later of undergraduate study and a current resident of King’s IJʿ

b) Demonstrated evidence of financial need, including supporting material

c) Demonstrated evidence of work – holidays and part time

In order to receive a scholarship the student must be accepted as a continuing member of King’s IJʿ.
